Most of us can remember our last bad hangover. The headache, the lights, the 3am sweats, and even worse, the hangxiety. We often start those mornings swearing off drinking, making promises to ourselves that we will drink only on the weekends, only to find ourselves wound up and cracking a bottle at 5 p.m. This cycle can last weeks, months, years, decades. Tragically, this cycle is reinforced by society as the cost of fun. We, especially as women, are sold the story that this will help us be social, fun, cope with motherhood, and something we absolutely cannot live without. But what is your story? We are likely enraptured in this societal narrative, but the glimmer of hope is that there is a small whisper inside of you. This whisper is your story. This gut check, the nudge to get out of the cycle, the gentle intuition that suggests this isn’t working for you anymore. This is the invitation to craft a new story. The process of listening to these gentle nudges can feel extremely isolating and wrought with questions. “Who am I without alcohol?” “What if I don’t want to abstain and I just want a break?” “What if my friends don’t like the sober me?” “What if I don’t like the sober me?” This is curiosity. Sober Curiosity. And this self-exploration is isolating because you’re taking an issue that has historical been deemed a black and white issue and turning it gray. Sober curiosity is living in the gray and being wholeheartedly accepted at any stage of this self-exploration. Stepping out of isolation and into a group can feel pretty scary, but the power of the community and healing is worth it. At Above and Beyond Counseling, we are hosting a process group led by a therapist under supervision, dedicated to exploring your relationship with alcohol. In this group, there are no labels and there are no prerequisites. In this group, there is confidentiality and radical self-compassion. We reframe failure, we don’t fix each other because we are not broken, we find the language that works for our journey, we honor our path, and we learn how to trust ourselves to find the way. If you are hearing the whisper or feeling the nudge, you don’t have to go it alone. The group begins October 2, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. via zoom. Sign up here if you are interested in learning more.
